78-Year-Old Man Murders Wife and Disposes of Dismembered Remains in Suitcases
Unveiling the Disturbing Depths of a Troubled Mind
William Lowe Jr. was not a man who would raise any suspicion. He was a quiet, unassuming 78-year-old Florida man who lived in a Delray Beach apartment with his wife, Aydil Barbosa Fontes. William was a retired surgeon, and Aydil was a retired nurse. They had been married for over 50 years and had no children. The couple seemed to be living a peaceful and happy life for their neighbors.
But little did anyone know what was going on behind closed doors. On July 21, officers responded to the Intracoastal Waterway about human remains, and according to an arrest report obtained by WPEC-TV, officers discovered multiple small rocks and a pair of human legs inside a suitcase.
Police reportedly found a second suitcase along the west side of the Intracoastal Waterway with a torso, hands, and small rocks.
Detectives learned about another suitcase with a woman’s pelvis and a Cheesecake Factory bag, WPEC reports.
Police executed a search of the Intracoastal Waterway and reportedly found a tote bag wrapped with a man’s belt, which contained a human head with a gunshot wound.
The gruesome discovery of Aydil’s dismembered remains in multiple suitcases shocked the entire community and left everyone wondering what could have been going on in the mind of her husband, William Lowe Jr., who was charged with first-degree murder and abuse of a body in the death of his 80-year-old wife, Aydil Barbosa Fontes.
As the investigation progressed, detectives learned that Lowe had shot his wife in the head, dismembered her body at their apartment in Delray Beach, and placed the remains in multiple suitcases, which he dumped in the Intracoastal Waterway.
Detectives interviewed multiple witnesses who saw Lowe in the area where the suitcases were discovered. Witnesses reportedly confronted Lowe, and he drove off in a gold Ford Taurus, which was captured by surveillance video. Officials were able to obtain the vehicle’s information and track him down.
During questioning, Lowe was “nervous” and told police his wife, Barbosa Fontes, had been in Brazil for about three weeks. However, officials reportedly identified the victim as Barbosa Fontes through dental records.
Police searched Lowe’s storage unit and found a blood-covered chainsaw, bone matter, and human hair. Additionally, they discovered a cooler with red stains.
Investigators believe Lowe had meticulously planned the murder and disposal of his wife’s body. He had even purchased multiple suitcases and bags to transport her remains.
The motive behind the murder remains unclear, but investigators believe that it may have been related to the couple’s financial troubles.
William Lowe Jr. remains held in the Palm Beach County Main Detention Center, awaiting trial for the heinous crime he committed. The community is left in shock and disbelief as they try to face the horrific events in their quiet neighborhood.
