California Takes Steps to Decrease Dangerous Sideshows and Street Racing

California law enforcement agencies have taken successful measures in decreasing illegal sideshows by 50% in the past year. Sideshows, takeovers, and street racing are dangerous and illegal activities that pose a significant threat to public safety. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has been leading the efforts to address and decrease these activities, and it received $5.5 million in the 2022–23 state budget to continue its work. Despite the progress made, more must be done to eliminate these dangerous activities.

To further address sideshows, takeovers, and street racing in California, the CHP has received a $2 million federal grant, known as the Sideshow, Takeover, Racing, Education, and Enforcement Taskforce grant. The grant aims to decrease the number of severe and fatal incidents related to these activities. The funds will provide additional resources and tools to law enforcement agencies to combat these illegal activities, including increased patrols, technology, and education campaigns. This grant complements the CHP’s recent work and the state budget allocation, demonstrating a continued commitment to addressing and decreasing the prevalence of these dangerous activities.

The CHP has laid out plans and strategies to combat sideshows and street racing in California, which includes increasing education and outreach efforts to make the public aware of the dangers of these activities. The CHP also plans to work with local communities to develop strategies that address the root causes of these activities, such as a lack of resources and opportunities for young people. Additionally, the CHP will continue to enforce laws and regulations related to these activities, focusing on identifying and prosecuting those responsible for organizing and participating in them. These multi-faceted approaches are crucial to effectively address and eliminate these dangerous activities from California’s streets.
