Little do people think that the brain aging process may considerably vary in different individuals: from very small changes to serious cognitive decline. Let’s dive into why such differences come into being and how they manifest.

Why Brain Aging Differs

  1. Genetics: Below you will see that with aging, genetics takes an integral role in shaping how our brains relate to aging. We all come into this world with some people born with genes that will make the brain less susceptible to aging and some born with genes that will make them more susceptible to cognitive decline.
  2. Lifestyle Factors: Turns out, that what we do every day, our nutrition, our exercise, our sleep, are all important modulators of brain health. There are many things we can do, or not do, that may maintain our cognitive function as we get older: a diet rich in antioxidants, regular exercise, and adequate sleep to name a few.
  3. Environmental Factors: In addition to aging, further hastening brain deterioration are a wide array of environmental stressors — pollutants and toxins among them. In fact, living in a polluted area or prolonged chronic stress may have negative effects on the functioning of your brain.
