Welcoming migrants to the city, the Los Angeles City Council moved in June of 2023. Councilman Kevin de Leon passionately proposed the motion to establish Los Angeles as a sanctuary city, stating that supporting immigrants on moral and economic grounds was imperative. Nevertheless, unforeseen outcomes have been unveiled due to this decision. Councilman Kevin de Leon’s motion was passed unanimously.

In its bid to become a sanctuary city, Los Angeles has faced difficulty managing the surge of immigrants. Andrew Mahaleris, Mayor Eric Garcetti’s representative, admitted that the city has been inundated with the arrival of migrants. This is vastly different from the daily challenges faced by overloaded border towns in Texas, which have been grappling with the consequences of the immigration policies of the Biden administration for several months.

Amidst the announcement that Los Angeles is becoming a sanctuary city, Texas Governor Gregg Abbott has warned that state resources will be withheld from any town that mirrors this move. In response, the Los Angeles City Council is contemplating potential legal action against the state of Texas and its governor. These developments in LA are noteworthy. However, they hardly hold a candle to the relentless obstacles faced by border towns in Texas, where a dynamic flow of migrants has created tremendous strain for months. It is high time for the Biden administration to take proactive measures to secure the border to alleviate this burden on Texas and California rather than employing threats towards Texas.
