Is Society Failing to Protect Individuals with Autism from Violence?
It’s important to acknowledge the struggles that individuals with autism encounter regarding communicating and socializing, which often leaves them defenseless against violence. A prime example of this issue occurred when a 23-year-old woman with autism was assaulted on a Montgomery County Ride On bus, merely underscoring the reality of how susceptible individuals with autism can be to physical harm. These individuals may not possess the money to identify and react to dangerous situations, making them straightforward targets for perpetrators. Therefore, we must recognize and appreciate the unique difficulties that individuals with autism experience and adopt adequate safeguards to ensure their safety and welfare.
It’s heartbreaking to see the overwhelming risks faced by those with autism — their vulnerability is a matter of grave concern. The case of a young girl being attacked almost 100 times on a school bus in South Carolina in 2018 is just one of the many examples illustrating the need for more excellent protection and awareness for people with autism. This circumstance is not unusual, and we must examine the root causes leading to violent acts against people with autism. We can work towards this goal by educating and spreading awareness among the public and improving the preparation of law enforcement and other first responders.
The recent attack on a 23-year-old woman with autism while on a Ride On bus in Montgomery County has emphasized prioritizing the safety and protection of those with autism. The well-being of these individuals is paramount, and it is critical that they can travel without any apprehension about encountering violent incidents. One effective solution may involve implementing heightened security measures on public transportation and improving personnel training to enable quicker recognition and response to situations involving individuals with autism.
To build a just and inclusive society, we must acknowledge the unrelenting and unique challenges experienced by individuals with autism. As such, it is imperative that those who commit acts of violence against them are held accountable and that justice is served. Safeguarding their welfare is fundamental, and by taking action to achieve this, we are on the path toward a fairer and more equitable society.
