Healthcare, like almost every other industry, is undergoing a sea change because of technology. With practice becoming more patient-centered, EMRs are becoming the vehicle for more continuous, more effective, and more personalized engagement with patients through emerging intrusively patient-friendly technology called Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG). So, what exactly is RAG and why is it important to improve how the healthcare provider interacts with the patient?

What Is Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)?

Let’s start with the basics. RAG is a type of artificial intelligence that combines two powerful technologies: real-time data retrieval and large language models (LLMs). In basic terms, LLMs like ChatGPT can answer based off of patterns they’ve learned from vast amounts of data. However, they lack accuracy or up-to-date information. That’s where RAG comes in.

How It Works: These language models provide a layer of information retrieval on top of which RAG is added. Just like humans, the model goes beyond pre-stored knowledge and seeks external sources…
